Arvidsson's Hat Trick Helps Ads to Win
Des Moines, IA--Viktor Arvidsson scored three goals and Marek Mazanec stopped 29 shots to earn his first career AHL shutout as the Milwaukee Admirals downed the Iowa Wild 4-0 Saturday night.
The Admirals are undefeated through four games for the third time in franchise history. The last time was in the 1988-89 season. The other time was in the 1982-83 campaign. The team record for consecutive wins to start a season is five ('88-'89).
Arvidsson’s hat trick was Milwaukee’s first since Auston Watson achieved the feat at home against Chicago April 12, 2014. It was the first accomplished on the road since Mike Santorelli did it March 29, 2009 at Chicago.
Mazanec had recorded two NHL shutouts with Milwaukee’s parent club, the Nashville Predators, last season but had never accomplished the task in the AHL until now.
Milwaukee grabbed an early lead on Joe Pendenza’s second goal of the season. Defenseman Taylor Aronson had the puck at the point. He passed it to Zach Budish at the right circle. Budish shot the puck off the stick of Iowa goalie Johan Gustafsson. The rebound came right to Pendenza in the slot and he buried it. Pendenza’s goal, scored at 3:03 of the first period, was assisted by Budish and Aronson.
Milwaukee made it 2-0 with a power play goal at 17:21 of the first period. Austin Watson passed the puck from the left corner behind the Iowa goal to the right corner for Garrett Noonan. Noonan fed Viktor Arvidsson in the slot and Arvidsson blasted a shot inside the left post for his second goal of the season (both on the power play).
Arvidsson made it 3-0 at 2:48 of the second period. Receiving a pass from Noonan, Arvidsson showed a big windup for a slap shot, then fired what amounted to a change up under the leg of Gustafsson for his second goal of the night.
Arvidsson completed the hat trick at 5:42 of the second period with a slap shot from the top of the right circle that clanged off the left post and into the net. It was another power play goal and was assisted by Anthony Bitetto and Watson.
