Ads Comeback for OT Win
Des Moines, IA--The Admirals overcame a two-goal third period deficit and Adam Payerl scored the game-winner in overtime to give the Admirals a 3-2 win Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
It was Milwaukee's first win of the season (1-2-0-0). The Admirals improved to 8-0-1-1 lifetime against the Wild in Des Moines.
Payerl stole the puck from Iowa defenseman Mike Reilly at the Admirals blue line and led a 2-on-1 rush. From the left wing, Payerl drove to the net. His initial shot was stopped but he buried the rebound for his first goal as an Admiral.
The Ads forced the overtime at 18:24 of the third period. The Admirals called a timeout, pulled goalie Juuse Saros with 1:53 to play and ended up scoring the equalizer just 17 seconds later. Defenseman Trevor Murphy’s shot from the right point made it through traffic but was deflected just before it made it to the net. The bounce was fortunate for Milwaukee as Vladislav Kamenev slapped the loose puck into the net for his second goal of the season. Murphy recorded an assist, his first professional point, as did Colton Sissons.
The game was scoreless until 7:32 of the second period. With the Admirals on a power play, an errant pass to the left point sprung Iowa’s Zack Mitchell on a shorthanded breakaway. Milwaukee forward Stevie Moses caught up to him but had to impede Mitchell by putting his stick in his ribcage which resulted in a penalty shot for Mitchell. Mitchell scored with a shot between the legs of Saros to give Iowa a 1-0 lead.
The Wild claimed a two-goal lead when Matt Carey slammed a rebound off the end wall into the net at 12:19 of the second period.
Milwaukee cut the deficit in half with its first power play goal of the season at 2:03 of the third period. Max Reinhart won the faceoff in the right circle. Payerl passed the puck into the slot where Frederick Gaudreau fired a blast over the shoulder of Irving for his first goal of the season. Payerl and Reinhart recorded the assists.
Saros recorded his first North American win with 23 saves.
The Admirals return home to host the Rockford IceHogs Saturday night at 7pm. After the game, Foreigner will perform in concert.
