Admirals to Honor WWII POW Friday

The Milwaukee Admirals will honor World War II veteran George Michel (pronounced Michael) before the game on Friday, November 9th. Michel will be doing a pre-game ceremonious puck drop with the captains from each team.

In 1943 Michel was drafted into the United States military at the ripe age of 18 and underwent rigorous training, along with his peers, to prepare him for future combat. Upon completion of training he was assigned to a B24 bomber crew, in which his duties were radio operator and gunner. Michel was sent to England with the 392nd Bomb Group in 1944, his first bombing mission was on June 11, 1944, just five days after D-Day.

Thirty days after his first mission Michel’s plane was damaged on a bombing mission to Munich, Germany. The plane crashed in Sweden, all the members survived but they were held as POW’s. Through the help of the French Underground Mr. Michel escaped custody and returned to the United States, where he still resides in Milwaukee.

The Admirals will also honor Army Sergeant Matt Curler during the Hometown Hero portion of the game. Curler has received four Army Commendation Medals for sustained acts of heroism or meritorious service. He has done two combat tours, both in Iraq, in 2004 and 2009.
