Texas forwards Travis Morin and Colton Sceviour each scored a pair of goals to lead the Stars to a 7-4 victory over the Milwaukee Admirals Friday in Cedar Park, TX.
The loss was Milwaukee’s first in regulation time this season, snapping a season-opening eight game points streak for Milwaukee (6-0-2-0).
Forward Miikka Salomaki played a part in every goal for the Admirals. The rookie forward had a goal and three assists.
Magnus Hellberg took the loss in goal for the Admirals. Hellberg stopped 33 of 39 shots in his first game action since he played 12:12 in the NHL for Nashville Oct. 26. It was his first AHL game since Oct. 19. Scott Darling replaced Hellberg and played the last 5:54.
The Admirals got on the board first when defenseman Joonas Jarvinen scored his first goal of the season at 2:57 of the first period. Joonas Rask dropped a pass from the left circle to Jarvinen at the left point. Salomaki, who also recorded an assist on the goal, was screening Texas goalie Josh Robinson and Jarvinen’s shot went high into the net.
Texas tied the game with a shot from the left point of its own. Jamie Oleksiak’s low slapper was able to beat Hellberg at 6:46 of the first period to knot the game at one.
The Stars claimed the lead at 6:10 of the second period when Travis Morin scored a 5-on-3 power play goal, his ninth of the season.
Texas stretched the lead to 3-1 with another power play goal, this time by Colton Sceviour, at 8:11 of the second period.
Salomaki got the Admirals within one with a power play goal at 12:56 of the second period. Filip Forsberg moved from the left wing boards toward the slot. The puck bounced away from him to Salomaki at the right circle. Salomaki’s slapshot found the back of the net for his second goal of the season. Forsberg and Joe Piskula notched the assists.
Just 34 seconds after Salomaki’s goal, Morin’s second goal of the game gave the Stars a 4-2 lead.
Milwaukee climbed within one goal, again, with a power play tally at 4:40 of the third period. Filip Forsberg fired a shot from the left faceoff dot over the right shoulder of the Stars goalie. Salomaki and Piskula posted the helpers.
At 7:05, Texas defenders blocked a Scott Ford shot and went toward Hellberg on a 2-on-0. Toby Petersen flipped a pass to Brett Ritchie for the eventual game-winner.
Milwaukee defenseman Anthony Bitetto scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season, third on the power play, to get the Admirals within one goal at 5-4. Bitetto carried the puck to the net but it was poked away. Salomaki sent a shot to the goal from the right circle that Bitetto knocked out of mid-air for the goal at 11:28 of the third period.
The Admirals had one more power play chance but Sceviour scored a short-handed goal at 14:05 to give the Stars a 6-4 lead. Scott Glennie scored an empty-net goal with a minute remaining to close the scoring.
The Admirals continue the four-game road trip at Texas Saturday and San Antonio on Sunday. Milwaukee returns to the BMOHBC on Wednesday, November 13th against the Grand Rapids Griffins.
