San Antonio, TX--Jon Matsumoto scored the lone goal in a shootout to lead the San Antonio Rampage past the Milwaukee Admirals 3-2 Sunday afternoon.
Matsumoto, the first shooter in the shootout, was able to slide a shot through the legs of Admirals goalie Magnus Hellberg. San Antonio’s four remaining shooters failed to score. Unfortunately for the Admirals, San Antonio goalie Dov Grumet-Morris shut down all five Admirals shooters.
The loss was Hellberg’s first in a shootout since coming to North America. He’s now 3-1 in shootouts, stopping 16 of 19.
San Antonio scored the first goal of the game late in the second period. The Admirals had trouble clearing the defensive zone and Steve Pinizzotto made them pay as he roofed a shot from the right circle at 14:19 of the second frame.
Just 1:21 later, former Admirals forward Jed Ortmeyer redirected a pass from Drew Shore into the net to give the Rampage a 2-0 lead.
The Admirals used a power play goal to get on the board with 2:40 left in the second period. Colton Sissons tapped a loose puck to Mark Van Guilder. Van Guilder then had a 2-on-1 against a defender. A quick pass to the left circle found Bryan Rodney moving to the net and he converted for his second goal of the season (both on the power play).
Simon Moser’s second goal of the season tied the game for the Admirals at 6:19 of the third period. Austin Watson backhanded a pass from the left circle into the slot. Filip Forsberg deflected it to the right post for Moser’s goal.
Including last Sunday’s game at Iowa, the Admirals finished the four game road trip with three of a possible eight points.
