Smith Wins it in OT for Milwaukee
Milwaukee, WI--Captain Trevor Smith scored the game-winning goal 1:33 into overtime to complete a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the Charlotte Checkers Tuesday night at the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.
The win extended their point streak to six games and the Ads have wins in five of those. It also gave the Admirals a 4-0-1 record on their season-long five-game homestand.
Smith's heroics started with a turnover in the corner of the Charlotte zone, which Matt White collected and fed to Smith. Smith went in uncontested on Charlotte goalie Michael Leighton and beat him five-hole for his third tally of the season.
The Checkers jumped out to an early lead on Andrew Poturalski's team-leading fifth goal of the season at the 10:05 of mark of the second period.
Charlotte pushed their lead to two with just under seven minutes to play in the second as Valentin Zykov beat Milwaukee goalie Jonas Gunnarsson.
Harry Zolnierczyk got the Admirals on the board with his first as a member of the team with only 14 seconds remaining in the middle frame. Zolnierczyk was a trailer coming into the Checkers zone, took a feed and fired a wrister under the arm of Leighton.
Freddy Gaudreau leveled the score at two 1:33 into the third period as he was able to poke the puck past the right pad of Leighton for his second tally of the season.
Gunnarsson stopped 23 shots to earn his first win as an Admiral.
The Ads now hit the road for a pair of games later this week in Cleveland against the defending Calder Cup Champs. The first is Thursday night at 6 pm ET from Quicken Loans Arena.
