Admirals Dropped by Griffins
Mitch Callahan scored twice and Petr Mrazek stopped 16 shots to lead the Grand Rapids Griffins to a 5-0 win over the Milwaukee Admirals Wednesday night in Grand Rapids, MI.
The Admirals were shutout for the first time this season and held to a season-low 16 shots on goal.
The Admirals had problems getting anything going in the first period. The Griffins outshot Milwaukee 11-0 in the first eight minutes. Milwaukee didn’t register its first shot on goal until the 13:52 mark of the first period and totaled just four in the stanza. The Griffins had 14.
The Griffins took a two-goal lead with a pair of tallies in the second period. The first came at 1:49 when Riley Sheahan pushed a rebound past Hellberg for a power play goal. Hellberg made the right pad save on Nathan Paetsch’s shot from the right point but the rebound found Sheahan in the left circle.
Grand Rapids’ Mitch Callahan slapped a loose puck from between Hellberg’s legs at the end of a shorthanded rush to give the Griffins the two-goal cushion at 9:55 of the frame.
The Griffins added two more in the third period. Cory Emmerton scored a power play goal just 49 seconds into the third period. Callahan scored his second of the game at 10:08. Scott Darling replaced Hellberg after that marker.
Griffins forward David McIntyre added a goal with 1:03 remaining to close the scoring.
Hellberg finished with 32 saves on 36 Griffins shots. Darling stopped six of seven.
