The Grand Rapids Griffins scored three goals in the final five minutes of the first period Friday night then held on to defeat the Milwaukee Admirals, 4-2, in Grand Rapids, MI.
The loss snapped the Admirals three-game winning-streak.
Trailing 1-0, the Griffins tied the game at 15:09 of the first period with a Ryan Sproul slapshot from the left faceoff dot. The power play goal was assisted by Adam Almquist and Tomas Jurco.
The Griffins took the lead for good at 16:32 of the first period. Mitch Callahan's shot from the left circle went over the head of Admirals goalie Scott Darling. Instead of continuing to the right, the puck hit a seam in the glass and bounced back to Callahan who found himself with a large part of the net to shoot the puck into as Darling wasn't expecting the bad hop.
Grand Rapids scored what proved to be the game-winner at 18:26 of the first period when Teemu Pulkkinen tapped in a loose puck from the left post.
The Admirals had taken a short-lived lead at 8:01 of the first period. Mathieu Tousignant took a big hit at center ice but was able to move the puck to Miikka Salomaki. Salomaki raced into the offensive zone and the right wing and backhanded a pass to the goalmouth where Joonas Rask used his backhand to tap the puck into the net for his first goal of the season.
Admirals forward Colton Sissons put the Admirals within one when he tallied his team-leading tenth goal of the season at 5:58 of the second period. Vinny Saponari passed the puck from the left wing boards to Charles-Olivier Roussel at the right point. Griffins goalie Tom McCollum stopped Roussel's wristshot, but Sissons pushed the rebound into the net.
The Griffins iced the game with an empty-net goal from Landon Ferraro with five seconds remaining in the contest.
The Admirals face Grand Rapids again Saturday night before returning home next Friday for a game against the San Antonio Rampage at 7:00 pm.
