Admirals Topple Rockford
Goalie Scott Darling stopped 34 shots to lead the Milwaukee Admirals over the Rockford IceHogs, 3-1, Saturday night in Rockford, IL.
Darling improved to 5-1-0 on the season. Milwaukee has won two straight and evened its road record at 6-6-2-1. The win moved the Admirals into a second-place tie with the IceHogs in the Midwest Division with 33 points. Rockford has played five more games than the Admirals.
The loss was Rockford’s first in regulation this season when they score the first goal (9-1-2-0).
Rockford scored a power play goal at 11:24 of the first period to claim a 1-0 lead. Brett Skinner’s shot from the right point was blocked by Admirals defenseman Joonas Jarvinen but it deflected into the slot where Joakim Nordstrom roofed the puck over the shoulder of Milwaukee’s goalie.
Milwaukee tied the game late in the second period. Defenseman Charles-Olivier Roussel cleared the defensive zone with a right wing pass to Colton Sissons. Sissons skated to the top of the right circle in the IceHogs zone and fired a shot that was kicked away by Rockford goalie Kent Simpson to the left circle. Miikka Salomaki tracked it down and planted the rebound to the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season with just 49.1 seconds left in the second stanza.
Admirals captain Scott Ford gave the team the lead just 52 seconds into the third period when his high wristshot from the middle of the blue line beat Simpson through a Mark Van Guilder screen. Ford’s second of the season was assisted by Simon Moser and Van Guilder.
Moser scored a power play goal to give Milwaukee a 3-1 lead at 8:24 of the third period. Rockford’s Alex Broadhurst attempted to clear the puck, but Austin Watson knocked the puck down and flipped it to the net for Moser to slide under the right pad of Simpson for his fifth goal of the season.
The Admirals return to the ice Sunday afternoon at Chicago. The Ads return to home ice on Thursday, December 26th when the team hosts Grand Rapids at 7:00 pm.
