Admirals Cup Action Day 1
The Homestead Highlanders dominated the WNS Storm 10-0 Monday Morning at the Mullet Center. Cole Simpson of the Highlanders scored two goals and had two assists in their opening game of the Admirals Cup presented by Bradley Coporation.
Cole Simpson started off his morning by scoring in the opening minute of the game. He was unassisted on the play and wrristed one top shelf past Robert Ali of the Storm. For their second goal of the game Adam Hobbs cleared the puck on a penalty kill with a pass to Ryan Mezera. The pass led to a fast break opportunity for Mezera. Mezera put on back-side past Ali.
Simpson got his second goal of the game on a beautiful three on one fast break opportunity. Jon Weyker carried the puck past mid ice when he saw Michael Shultz on the left wing. Weyker Chipped the puck over the defenders stick to Shultz who carried the puck towards the left circle. Shultz saw simpson cutting backdoor and fed him the puck for a one-timer goal.
After a hooking penalty on the Storm, the Highlanders had their first power play opportunity. The Highlanders were working the puck around their offensive zone with percision passing. Simpson got the puck at the top of the hey when he found Brad7y Bjork near the right circle. Bjork then made a pass to Riley Dixon in front of the crease. Dixon then turned around and put one past Ali.
Around a minute later the highlander got another fast break opportunity when Alex Hobbs got the puck on a two on one rush. Hobbs found Jake Hansen crashing the left lane and fed him the puck. Hansen shot the puck five-hole agains Ali to give the Highlanders a 5-0 lead.
The Highlanders added to their dominating second period with 2:55 left in the period when Alex Hobbs took the puck through two Storm defenders and wristed one past Ali. But the Highlanders were not done yet. They scored again under a minute to go in the period to put them up 7-0. Zach Maassen started the fast break this time. As he was driving to the net he found Michael Schultz filling the left lane. Schultz immediatly passed it to Jon Weyker backdoor for the goal.
The Highlanders did not let up in the third period. Jake Hansen made a pass to Ryan Mezera who split two defenders and put the puck five-hole again for his second goal of the game. The highlanders scored back-to-back goals with just under 5 minutes to go in the game. The first came off a break away opportunity from Jake Hansen. Hansen writed on glove side past Ali for his second goal of the game. The second goal came off a beautiful pass from Cole Simpson to Jesse Nye. Simpson had the puck behind the net when he saw Nye in front of the net. He made the pass to Nye who one timed it past Ali for the final goal of the game.
The Highlanders will Face the winner on the Fond du Lac Cardinals and the Germantown Ice Bears on Thursday December 26th at 11am, The WSN Storm will face the loser of that game on the same day at 12:45 pm.
