Marquette Tops Brookfield
In the second game of round two of the Admirals Cup, the Brookfield Stars came out to an early lead on a Carter Jenkins goal, but would fall handily to the Marquette Hilltoppers as they went on to score six unanswered goals and win 6-1 at Wilson Park Monday morning.
With shots hard to come by for the Stars in the first period, having only two, they held onto their only lead until a Joe Llaurado goal for Marquette at 9:58 to tie the game up 1-1. Shots weren’t a problem for the Hilltoppers, racking up 8 in the first.
Marquette took advantage of the powerplay early in the second period claiming the lead on a Kevin Hanigan goal at 2:21. The Stars offense started to generate more shots in the second, yet it was the play of the goaltender Mike Roznik that gave Marquette the edge in this contest, shutting down the Stars the rest of the game. Later in the second Marquette forward Griff Jeszka would add to the lead with a goal at 6:26.
Finding themselves down 3-1 going into the third period, the Stars continued to generate some good offense but couldn’t put anything past Roznik. The routing continued as Marquette’s Llaurado, Hanigan and Jeszka each had another goal.
Aside from the outstanding goaltending of Roznik with 18 saves, a standout star of the game is hard to choose with Marquette’s Llaurado, Hanigan and Jeszka each having 2 goals and 3 assists.
The Hilltoppers return to the ice Wednesday, December 28th when they play in the championship game of the Admirals Cup. Marquette will take on the winner of the Cedarburg High School and Whitefish Bay, Nicolet Shorewood High School. The puck will drop at 2:46 p.m.
