University School Gets by Kenosha
Milwaukee, WI—Aaron Storch scored the game-winning goal that broke a 3-3 tie with 6:26 left in the third period to lift University School of Milwaukee to a 5-3 win over Kenosha in the first round of the Milwaukee Admirals High School Hockey Showdown, presented by Bradley Corporation Monday afternoon at Wilson Park.
Kenosha got on the board first when Chad Battisfore knocked in the rebound of a shot from the point by Sam LaScola at 8:57 of the opening period. However, University School picked up the equalizer on an unassisted tally by senior forward Ian Palin at 11:12 and then grabbed a 2-1 lead with just 1:09 to play when Vadim Sukhanov lit the lamp on assists from Simon Leahy and Joey Judge.
Kenosha picked up the lone goal of the second period, in spite of being outshot 24-6. Senior Dustin Day scored an unassisted goal off a slap shot from the top of the left circle at 8:16 of the period.
The third period was a wild one that saw a combined four goals, three of them by USM, as the Wildcats came away with the victory. University School got on the board first with a power-play goal by Palin at 6:44 of the stanza, on an assist from James Shovers, but Kenosha tied the score again when Cody Shatzman found the back of the net just 2:02 later.
USM got the game-winner from Aaron Storch with less than seven minutes to play on a beautiful pass from Leahy that found Storch on the right post for the tip-in at 10:34 of the third. Kenosha had their chance at the end on found themselves on a 6-on-4 power-play for the last 34 seconds, but University School iced it with an empty netter by Charlie Larson with 27 seconds remaining.
Leahy led all scorers with a goal and a pair of assists, while Shovers notched two points (1g-1a). Kenosha netminder Nic Wise made 45 saves, but suffered the loss.
University School now advances to the second round the Admirals High School Hockey Showdown, presented by Bradley Corporation where they meet the winner of the Homestead-Cedarburg contest on Tuesday afternoon.
