Hilltoppers Outlast Warhawks
The Marquette Hilltoppers picked up two goals from senior Joe Washcovick as they were able to take out the Arrowhead Warhawks 4-1 at Wilson Park on Tuesday, and advance to the championship game of the Admirals High School Hockey Showdown, presented by the Bradley Corporation.
Arrowhead was able to get on the board just eleven seconds into the game on a goal by senior forward Brady Vassar. Off of a shot from the left circle, Vassar was able to track down the rebound and knock it in the goal to put the Warhawks up 1-0. Colton Sweitzer recorded an assist on the goal for Arrowhead.
Midway through the first period the top-ranked Marquette Hilltoppers were able to tie up the game at 6:12. Hilltopper junior forward Joe Llaurado received a pass at the Warhawk blue-line from fellow junior Aaron Miller and stick handled his way around the defense. Llaurado then lifted a backhander over the Arrowhead goaltender to tie the game at 1-1.
Then, on the power play, Marquette was able to take the lead at 12:57 on a goal by junior forward Kevin Hannigan. Hannigan ripped off a shot from the blue line and got a good screen from his forward that allowed the puck to find its way in the net. The goal was assisted by junior James Lueken and junior Aaron Miller.
The Hilltoppers were able to net another power play goal 6:05 into the third period from Washcovick. In a scrap of players in front of the Warhawks net, Washcovick was able to get a stick on the puck and put it away for the goal to make the score 3-1. Hannigan also picked up an assist for Marquette on the goal.
With less than two minutes to play Marquette picked up an insurance goal on the power play from Washcovick, his second of the game. Lueken let go a shot from the blue line and Washcovick was able to get his stick on the puck to deflect it in top-shelf for the goal. Miller was also credited with an assist on the goal.
The Hilltoppers now advance to the championship game which will take place tomorrow at 2:46 at the Bradley Center to face the winner of the USM and Cedarburg game. The Warhawks will play in the third place game tomorrow at 12:06 at the Bradley Center and will face the loser of the USM versus Cedarburg game.
