Hilltoppers Win Second Straight Admirals Cup
MILWAUKEE - In the Championship game for the sixth annual Admirals Cup the Marquette Hilltoppers took on Whitefish Bay, Nicolet, Shorewood Storm. The Hilltoppers offense came to life as they recorded 52 shots and beat the Storm 7-1.
The Hilltoppers dominated the first period of play, keeping the puck in the Storms zone for most of the first period and as a result recording 24 shots to the Storms 7. Later in the period, on shot from the blue line deflected by Storm goalie Sean Leahy, Griff Jeszka found the lose puck and scored for the first goal of the game. The Hilltoppers kept the pressure on the Storm causing plenty of turnovers, one of which Joe Llaurado took advantage of for his first goal of the game going five-hole on Leahy giving the Hilltoppers a 2-0 lead with 8:11 to play in the first period.
The Hilltoppers weren’t done offensively as they added to their lead on a scramble in front of the net which led to Jackson Weiss knocking in the third goal. The goal came after an unproductive Storm power play and gave the Hilltoppers a 3-0 lead going into the second.
The Storm answered back 43 seconds into the second period as WNS cut into the Hilltoppers lead after Drew Kneisel shot went wide, and Djordje Torbica collected the rebound off the back wall and beat Mike Roznik making the score 3-1.
Later in the second the Hilltoppers doubled their lead from two to four scoring two goals within minutes of each other. Patrick Brandt found Patrick Tighe who went top shelf on Leahy’s glove side to extend the Hilltoppers lead to 4-1. Soon after, the Hilltoppers Llaurado intercepted a breakout pass at the blue line and sent a powerful snapshot over the glve-side shoulder of Leahy giving the Hilltoppers a 5-1 lead. Llaurado was not done as he recorded a hat trick at the 7:19 mark on a backhander through Leahy’s five-hole extending Marquette’s lead to 6-1.
Marquette extended their lead to 7-1 in the third period. The Hilltoppers took advantage of the power play as Aaron Miller received a pass from Jeszka and beat Leahy’s glove side.
Joe Llaurado recorded three goals and an assist in the game for the Hilltoppers. With the win Marquette wins their second straight Admirals Cup.
In the third place game of the Admirals Cup the Cedarburg Bulldogs defeated the Brookfield Stars 2-0. Olaf Jurenko and Jordan Furey scored the goals for the Bulldogs. Tyler Jansen recorded 35 saves in recording the shutout.
Down at Wilson Park Arrowhead Warhawks defeated Greendale Ice Force 9-2 in the seventh place game. Also at Wilson Park in the fifth place game the Kettle Moraine Lasers defeated the Germantown Ice Bears 2-1.
