Bulldogs Comeback for Third
The Cedarburg Bulldogs came out on top of the Arrowhead Warhawks with a 3-2 win for a third place finish with the help from senior forward Mitch Gall on Wednesday at the Admirals High School Hockey Showdown, presented by the Bradley Corporation.
In the first period the Warhawks took the lead as senior defenseman Travis Manser scored a power play goal at 7:26. Manser received a pass from the blue line and blasted a wrist shot from the left side, the puck traveled through the Bulldogs defense and past net minder Tyler Jansen. The goal was assisted by senior forward Will Rieland and senior forward Colton Sweitzer.
The scoring continued in the second period as the Warhawks posted another power play goal to increase their lead at 7:19 by junior forward Jared Johnson. Johnson was positioned on top of the left circle where he went hard to the net and lifted the puck over the shoulder of Cedarburg goaltender Jansen. Junior Garret Opay and senior Travis Manser were credited with the assists.
Just a minute later at 8:36 the Bulldogs were able to cut the lead in half as senior Freddie West scored. West was in front of the goal crease as he made a great first effort to capitalize on a backhand falling finish from a through pass from freshmen forward Nick Martin. Olaf Jurenko recorded an assist on the play.
Midway through the third period the Bulldogs went on to tie the Warhawks on a shorthanded goal by senior forward Mitch Gall at 9:56. Gall and Valoe went on a two-on-two attack with the Warhawks defense, Gall flicked the puck from the right side of the crease and was deflected in by the Warhawk defense for the goal. Senior forward Danny Valoe was credited with the assist.
Not too long after, the Bulldogs were not going to let this game go into extra time, as Gall scored his second goal of the game at 11:13 in the third period. Gall lifted the Bulldogs over the Warhawks with a red hot slap shot from the left side of the blue line, where the puck bounced off the Warhawk defense and into the net. West and senior Boehnlien recorded an assist on the play.
