Darling Helps Ads End 2013 on Strong Note
Goalie Scott Darling stopped 33 shots to lead the Milwaukee Admirals over the Iowa Wild, 4-0, Sunday afternoon in Des Moines, IA.
Darling recorded his third shutout of the season, and second against Iowa. Darling’s goals against average dropped to 1.43 and his save percentage improved to 95.5%. His overall record is now 7-1-0 on the season.
Milwaukee took a 1-0 lead at 14:04 of the first period. Defenseman Charles-Olivier Roussel sent a pass along the wall from the right point to Vinny Saponari. Saponari skated from behind the Wild goal and fed a pass from the left post to the right for Colton Sissons, who buried his team-leading 12th goal of the season.
The Admirals grabbed a 2-0 lead less than a minute later. Wild defenseman Corbin Baldwin was sent to the penalty box for roughing at 14:43. Sissons held the puck in the left wing corner and spotted Bryan Rodney in the slot. Rather than shooting, Rodney slid a pass to the bottom of the right circle where Anthony Bitetto potted his ninth goal of the season, sixth on the power play, at 14:53.
In the second period, Milwaukee had to kill four Iowa power play opportunities, including a double-minor to defenseman Bitetto with 4:11 remaining in the period. Neither team was able to score in the frame.
Saponari scored a power play goal with a wristshot from the left faceoff dot at 2:41 of the third period to give Milwaukee a 3-0 lead. The goal was Saponari’s third of the season, second on the power play. The assists went to Taylor Beck and Bitetto.
Austin Watson pushed a backhander into the net at 6:12 of the third period, his eighth goal of the season. Joe Piskula shot the puck from the left point. Goalie Johan Gustafsson made the initial save then stopped Kevin Henderson’s shot, but Watson buried the third chance. Henderson and Piskula recorded the assists.
The Admirals will play at Lake Erie January 3rd and 4th. The Admirals next home game is Monday January 6th at 7 pm against Iowa.
