Admirals Offense Clicks in Win
Milwaukee, WI—Mark Dekanich continued his solid net play, coming within three seconds of his first shutout of the season, while making 32 saves as the Milwaukee Admirals coasted to a 7-1 victory over the Rockford IceHogs.
On the offensive end of things sixteen of eighteen Milwaukee skaters recorded at least one point with seven different Admirals tallying a goal. Cal O’Reilly, Ben Guite and Peter Olvecky each notched a goal and an assist to lead the individual efforts.
The Admirals got the offense rolling early as Rockford goaltender Alec Richards was unable to coral the rebound off a mighty slap shot from Ryan Maki just above the lift circle. An aggressive Chris Mueller, crashing hard to the net, was able to scoop up the puck and toss it over Richard’s glove-side shoulder for his fifth goal off the season and second in as many nights.
A short time later Milwaukee’s Robert Dietrich ripped a hard slap shot from the right circle squarely into the chest of teammate Peter Olvecky, who was standing just above the crease. The puck caromed off Olvecky and past Richards, coming to rest in back of the Ice Hogs’ net. It was Olvecky’s ninth goal of the year and gave the Admirals a 2-0 lead.
Guite gave the Admirals a three-goal cushion with his fourth marker of the season just 31 seconds into the second period. Hugh Jessiman received the puck from Triston Grant atop the right circle and whipped a wrist shot off the left pad of Richards and onto the stick of Guite, resulting in Guite’s second goal in as many nights.
Attempting to answer the Admirals offensive onslaught the Ice Hogs had a great opportunity to slice into the Milwaukee lead, but a marvelous sprawling save by Dekanich turned back Rockford’s Danny Bois and kept the Ice Hogs off the scoreboard.
Leading 3-0, the Ads offensive attack did not rest. On their next power play opportunity, Cal O’Reilly found Colin Wilson all alone on the right dot. Wilson received the puck and cracked a slap shot past Richards for the Admirals fourth goal of evening.
At 17:47 of the second period Dave Scatchard, recently reassigned from Nashville, was able to beat Richards over his left arm with a hard shot that clanged off the back iron inside the goal to put Milwaukee up 5-0. The goal was Scatchard’s eighth of the 2009-10 campaign. Wacey Rabbit and Mark Matheson got in on the act, each notching an assist on the play.
Rockford Head Coach Bill Peters opened third period play with a new man in the net, electing to change things up by going with Joe Fallon between the pipes for the remainder of the contest. However, it couldn’t stop the Admirals offensive momentum and the sixth goal of the game snuck through the legs of Fallon at 9:34 of the third period. Mark Santorelli, coming off a three point performance the night prior, recorded his fifth goal of the year, essentially putting the game out of reach for Rockford.
To cap off what was a lopsided affair, center Cal O’Reilly put the biscuit in the basket for the final goal of the night at 15:55 of the third, with assists coming from Olvecky and Nolan Yonkman on the play.
The Admirals seven goals was a season high for them and the win put the Ads up two points on Rockford in what is a very tight race in the West Division. The Admirals look to continue their winning ways against the Houston Aeros Friday night at The Bradley Center.
