Admirals Streak Ended at Rockford
Milwaukee’s four game winning streak came to an end at Rockford Saturday night. In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, the IceHogs downed the Admirals 4-2.
Rockford is 9-0-0-4 in its last 13 games.
The IceHogs took an early lead when Bryan Bickell, positioned behind the Milwaukee net, tried to center the puck into the slot. An Admirals player deflected the pass behind Pekka Rinne to give Rockford the lead at 1:54 of the first.
Milwaukee tied the game at 5:46 of the first while Rockford was on the power play. A pass from the left corner to the slot in the Milwaukee zone was behind defenseman Danny Richmond. The puck ended up on the stick of John Vigilante who used his speed to make a two-on-one rush with Cal O’Reilly on the right wing. Vigilante fed O’Reilly in the right circle. O’Reilly’s wrist shot beat Norfolk goalie Corey Crawford for his seventh goal of the season. The shorthanded goal was O’Reilly’s fourth of the season, tying him for the league lead.
Rockford reclaimed the lead when Kris Versteeg deflected a pass from the bottom of the right circle between Rinne’s legs.
The IceHogs took a 3-1 lead after Martin St. Pierre pounded the puck past Rinne during a scramble in front of the Milwaukee netminder at 3:33 of the third period.
It became 4-1 when Colin Fraser’s wrist shot trickled through the legs of Rinne at 6:36.
Milwaukee finally scored its second goal with 2:10 remaining when Janne Niskala led the rush out of the Admirals zone. He found Rich Peverley at center ice. Peverley carried the puck across the middle of the IceHogs blue line then flipped a pass to Matt Ellison on the right wing. Ellison fired a wrist shot past Crawford for his sixth goal of the season. Peverley and Niskala recorded the assists.
Peverley has points in five straight games for Milwaukee.
Rinne stopped 19 shots for the Admirals.
The Admirals are off until Dec. 27 when the team hosts San Antonio at 7 p.m.
