Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago tops Mequon Homestead in Showdown Consolation

Milwaukee, WI--Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago goaltender Colin Robinson stopped 22 shots to earn a shutout as the Lancers defeated Mequon Homestead 3-0 in the consolation game in the RBC Dain Rauscher High School Hockey Showdown Thursday afternoon at the Bradley Center.

Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago controlled the puck most of the first period. Cody Mertens, from the Lasers, started their win by scoring the first goal just shy of 10 minutes into the period. The assists went to Jordan Rogala and Sam Frank.

In the second period Homestead had a golden opportunity to score while on the power play, but Tony Kwech’s shot rang off the Lasers goalpost. Later in the frame Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago’s Ethan Hudson was sent to the penalty box for two minutes for a hooking violation. After serving his time he stepped onto the ice and received the puck from John Schoback and with fired a shot from the blue line and scored a goal by going top right shelf. That was it for the scoring in the period as both goalies held strong by having a combined 19 saves in the second.

Homestead had their chances again in the third, but couldn’t convert on three power-play opportunites. While short handed Rogala sent a pass to Mike Cabush who slapped in their third and final goal of the game.

Sam Morris, the freshmen goalie from Homestead, swatted aside 16 of 19 shots that he took and earned him the third star award for the game. Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago Cody Mertens was awarded second star of the game for scoring the first goal of the game. Robinson was honored as the game’s first star after completing the shutout.
