Ads Allow Griffins to Score Seven

Dennis Yan scored two goals to lead the Grand Rapids Griffins to a 7-2 win over the Milwaukee Admirals Wednesday at Van Andel Arena.

The seven goals were the most allowed by the Admirals in a game this season.

Grand Rapids built a 3-0 lead in the first 11:02 of the game. Tyler Spezia deflected a Donovan Sebrango shot at 1:09 of the first to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead. Turner Elson made it 2-0 for the home team at 4:41 of the opening period. Then, Yan scored from between the circles at 11:02 to give Grand Rapids a 3-0 advantage.

Milwaukee finally got on the scoreboard at 19:17 of the first period when Graham Knott used his skate to kick the puck to Cole Smith in the slot. Smith deked to his left and buried the puck into the goal for his sixth tally of the season to make it 3-1 at the end of the first period. Knott and Josh Healey assisted on Smith’s goal.

Yan scored his second of the game at 2:56 of the second period to give Grand Rapids a 4-1 lead. It also signaled the end of the night for Ads goalie Connor Ingram, who stopped 14 of 18 shots. He was replaced boy Devin Cooley.

Milwaukee’s Mathieu Olivier made it 4-2 when he deflected a Dylan Blujus shot from the right circle into the net for his third goal of the season at 3:38 of the second stanza.

The Griffins made it 5-2 when Wyatt Newpower’s shot from the right circle buzzed past Cooley’s ear into the net at 9:23 of the second period. The goal was initially waved off by the referee and was awarded after a look at the video replay.

Griffins defenseman Jared McIsaac scored a power play goal at 11:15 of the third period with a shot from the point. Max Humitz scored at 17:52 of the final frame to close the scoring.

Cooley stopped 14 of 17 in relief. Griffins goalie Calvin Pickard earned the win with 25 saves.

The Admirals return home Fri., Jan. 7 to host the Cleveland Monsters at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.
