Ty Dellandrea scored a hat trick and Anthony Louis chipped in two goals to lead the Texas Stars to a 6-5 shootout win over the Milwaukee Admirals Friday at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.
The win was Texas’ first against the Admirals this season in six tries. The Admirals dropped to 5-0-0-1 against the Stars this season.
The Admirals needed two third period goals to force the overtime session. Trailing 5-3, Admirals forward Tommy Novak scored at 8:01 of the third period. Brayden Burke and Cole Smith earned the assists on Novak’s goal.
Then, Milwaukee’s Cole Schneider scored a power play goal at 15:27 of the third period when he deflected a shot by Novak into the goal for his 24th goal of the season. It was Schneider’s ninth power play goal of the year. Novak and Cody Glass picked up the helpers.
After a scoreless overtime, the game went to a shootout. Texas shooters Louis and Tanner Kero scored while Milwaukee was unable to score in two attempts.
Milwaukee scored the first goal of the game at 5:52 of the first period. Mitch McLain caught a cross-ice feed at the Texas blue line and carried the puck into the right circle. He fired a wrist shot over the left shoulder of the Texas goalie for his 14th goal of the season. Glass and Matt Donovan picked up the assists.
The Stars tied the game 1-1 when Dellandrea scored on a shorthanded breakaway at 15:12 of the first period.
Milwaukee reclaimed the lead less than a minute later. McLain shot the puck into the Stars zone. Texas goalie Adam Scheel left his crease to play the puck, but it caromed off the end boards back through the crease. Eventually, the puck ended up on the Stars left wing boards. A forced pass to try and clear the zone was intercepted in the high slot by Admirals forward Egor Afanasyev. He ripped a shot into the goal at 16:06 of the first frame for his 11th goal of the season.
In the second period, the Stars scored four goals to take the lead. Texas became the third team to score four goals in a single period against the Admirals this season. The first goal came from Anthony Louis, whose shot from the left circle rose over the glove of Ads goalie Connor Ingram at 2:18 of the second frame.
The Admirals took a 3-2 lead when Mathieu Olivier bulled his way to the goal from the right circle. Olivier powered past Stars defenseman Ben Gleason and jammed the puck through the legs of Scheel for his fourth goal of the season at 10:41 of the second period.
Texas tied the game when Dellandreea was sprung on another breakaway and scored his second of the game at 14:07 of the period.
Louis scored his second of the game after a scramble in front of the Admirals net at 14:54 of the second stanza to give Texas a 4-3 advantage.
The Stars added a power play goal when Dellandra completed the hat trick with a shot from the right circle at 16:42 of the second period. Dellandrea’s third goal gave the Stars a 5-3 lead.
The Admirals continue a four-game road trip Saturday at Texas. Milwaukee returns home Fri., Apr. 1 to host the Chicago Wolves at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.
